When I was in 4th grade, my class participated in a pen pal exchange. Mail from California came all the way to us over in Ohio. I still remember my pen pal's name was Leona and was blonde and rode horses. We talked about Cabbage Patch dolls and charm bracelets and I so looked forward to her letter every month. It was like a glimpse into another world.
(Maybe I'll see her on The Real Housewives of Orange County one day...)
Not long after Leona, I kept in touch with a friend from asthma camp... (I'll wait a minute for you to catch your breath from your riotous laughter.)... named Nicole. We somehow corresponded all through high school. It was so much fun to get actual mail in the mailbox. Of my very own. Usually in an envelope covered with stickers.
{I had this exact set!}
Oh, it was a great use of cute stationery. My kids don't even know stationery. They know notebook paper, printer paper, and my notepads.
So, I am asking my facebook friends- which are kind of like my own virtual and more immediate grown up pen pals- if they have pen pals for The Kiddos. I also found a couple of pen pal websites (that aren't for pen pals for prision inmates!)
What about you? Did you have a pen pal?
Leona or Nicole, if you're reading this, please drop me a line. I still don't have a horse and my asthma is much better. And yes, I still like holographic stickers.
Your friend,
UPDATE!
I spy another pen pal post! The gals at eighteen25 are also singing the praises of pen pals and her comments are a good way to find a pen pal for your kiddo. Yay!

My 8 year old needs a pen pal for his cub scout something or another. I had one from Australia when I was a kid. Loved it. I remember him sending me a stuffed koala. :) (I loved Poochie, too!)
ReplyDeleteI had a pen pal from Pennsylvania when I was about 8 years old. We didn't write many letters though. I think it's a great idea to get to know someone else your age who has had different experiences. What a good way to foster love and acceptance of those who are different from us. Good luck with the hunt!
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh - I just had a flashback with that stationery set - I don't know if I had that exact one, but I definitely had a few of those items!! Crazy!
ReplyDeleteI had a pen pal from South Africa for a while, that was pretty cool!!
